ReelWorld may have started as a venture between two friends in a Seattle apartment, but it has grown to be a force in its industry — driving a large portion of its revenue through partnerships with giants like Clear Channel. As the company has expanded over the years, its needs for cutting-edge technology and formalized IT policies have also increased. Four years ago, ReelWorld began using Dropbox for file sharing and storage, largely because it didn’t require extra hardware or on-premise infrastructure. “We were looking to get our data offsite,” explains Support Manager Mike Meyer. “We wanted to avoid losing anything to worst-case scenarios like fires or break-ins.” ReelWorld also appreciated how Dropbox handled data loads adaptively, “backing off on bandwidth” during uploads and downloads. And it worked across computing platforms, which was valuable to the Mac-based company in an industry full of PCs. The more ReelWorld relied on Dropbox — and ultimately Dropbox Business — the more it discovered how well Dropbox fit its evolving needs. Meyer says, “All the small changes Dropbox has implemented since I started with ReelWorld really set it apart from other cloud services. It’s come a long way, and it’s certain to continue getting better and better.”

Fine-tuned sharing and production

Dropbox Business has become essential to ReelWorld’s workflows and completion of projects. “The administrative and sales teams live on Dropbox Business,” says Meyer. Other frequent Dropbox users include composers and writers, singers, audio producers, and the team that handles content delivery. Everything from admin and finance documents to singers’ recorded vocals to mixed jingles are shared through Dropbox Business. “To share MP3s or WAV files before, we had to burn CDs,” remembers Meyer. “Dropbox Business allows us to facilitate content faster. It makes a great transport tool and an archive, as well.” The company’s production department maintains two distinct archives in Dropbox Business: a library of about 16,000 audio files used for active projects and a collection of sessions and files that aren’t currently needed, but may be in the future. Meyer says, “The fact that Dropbox for Business lets us thrust information off our local computers and access it on any other machine— whenever we need it—makes it such an invaluable tool.” Another value Dropbox Business offers ReelWorld is the ability to easily collaborate with external partners. When the company hires contractors, it can keep them fully in sync with in-house staff simply by sharing folders. To send files to clients, ReelWorld uses Dropbox Business shared links. According to Meyer, “We use Dropbox Business links to send previews of jingles and give clients a feel for them before they’re done.”

With employees and contractors in Seattle, the UK, and various other locations across the U.S. and Europe, ReelWorld is highly dependent on the remote file access Dropbox Business provides. Having files reliably sync, no matter where recipients are located, helps ReelWorld stay focused and productive. Meyer adds, “Working in different time zones can be tricky. But Dropbox Business will sync everything right up the next morning when the person turns on his or her computer.” Mobile file access and cloud storage are important during ReelWorld’s normal workdays, but they’re really crucial when it comes to protecting the company from those “worst-case scenarios” it initially feared. As Meyer attests, “When one employee’s computer got stolen, we were able to remotely access and destroy the files on it, which was great. Our rule of thumb is to keep everything in Dropbox Business in case of disaster, so we can recover and get re-set up fast.” Examples like these are just a few of the reasons why ReelWorld has stayed loyal to Dropbox Business all these years. As Meyer attests, “Dropbox Business is like the Swiss Army Knife of cloud services. There are so many little things we can do to manipulate and use it.
