How do I change the owner of a shared folder?

« Back to Help Center

If you're the owner of a shared folder, you can transfer ownership to another member by changing the folder's options on the Dropbox website. Once ownership is transferred, the new owner will be the only person who can unshare the folder or kick out members.

Transfer ownership of a shared folder

  1. Sign in to the Dropbox website.
  2. Select the Sharing tab from the sidebar on the left.
  3. Click the Options link to the right of the shared folder.
  4. Click the gear icon next to the person you want to make the new owner.
The pull-down menu containing the make owner option
    The Make owner option
  5. Click Make owner from the pull-down menu.

Please note that you must be the current owner of a shared folder to transfer ownership. By default, the original creator of a shared folder is the owner.

For our advanced users

If you're the owner of a shared folder and leave it without transferring ownership, the shared folder will be without an owner. In that case, you can always rejoin the shared folder and be reinstated as the owner. You can then choose to transfer ownership using the steps above.
