Commenting on Dropbox files

There are two ways to comment on files: make comments on the overall file, or on a specific part of the file. The first part of this article focuses on commenting on the overall file.

Commenting is available on any file or shared link previewed on dropbox.com. It is also available on the Dropbox Android or iOS apps.

Commenting options

  • @mentioning (the person icon)
  • Stickers (the smiley-face icon)
  • Comment on a specific area of a file (the square icon)

Comment notifications

The following people are notified when a comment is added to a file:

  • The file owner
  • Anyone who has commented on the file
  • Anyone who was @mentioned in the file

These same people also receive a notification on dropbox.com and on their Android or iOS device (if they have one).

Reply to a comment you're tagged in by responding to the notification email. Your response appears in the file comment pane on both dropbox.com and the Dropbox mobile apps.

Mention people in comments

When you comment, the following people are notified:

  • The file owner
  • Anyone who has commented on the file
  • Anyone @mentioned in the file

To notify someone else, you can @mention them to bring them into the conversation. You can do so by typing the @ symbol and beginning to type their name. (Do not add a space after the @ symbol.) If that person is in your contacts, an autocomplete option is shown. If not, you can type the @ symbol, followed by their email address to notify them.

If a person does not already use Dropbox, you can @mention them by their email address. The person then receives an email notification about the comment.

Reply to comments

  1. In the list of all your files and folders on dropbox.com, click a file to preview it.
  2. In the comments pane, hover your mouse cursor over an existing comment.
  3. Click Reply to open a text box.
  4. Click inside the textbox.
  5. Once finished with your reply, click Post.

Comments order

Comments are ordered chronologically—the most recent comments are at the top of the list. Replying to a comment moves that comment to the top of the list.

Comment visibility

Comments visibility is tied to the visibility of the file. Members with access to the file can also see its comments. If you've shared the file with others, they can see all comments on the file.

Leave specific comments on the desktop and mobile apps

You're only able to leave comments on a specific part of a document or image from dropbox.com.

However, you can view comments on a specific part from your mobile device.

Navigate specific comments

New comments appear in the comments pane in the doc or image preview. The comment also has a quick link, View on file, to the comment.

Specific comment order

A number is assigned to comments, ordered by the date comment is created. The first comment is assigned 1, the second comment is assigned 2, and so on. A number is always tied to its comment and is never updated, even if the comment is resolved or deleted. For instance, if comments 1 and 2 are deleted, comment 3 is still number 3.

Comment order is dictated by location in the document. Replying to a comment does not change its order.
