Fix unexpected behavior on desktop app builds

Sometimes the desktop app may not work as expected. To fix any unexpected behavior you see on the app, the best first step is to update to the latest stable version of the app.

How you update the app depends on the version you're currently running.

Generally, you're running a version called a stable build or a beta build:

  • The stable build is the current version of the app
  • Beta builds are still in a testing phase and include the latest updates to the app

Follow these steps to check which type of build you're using:

  1. Hover your cursor over the Dropbox icon in the system tray or menu bar. The app version appears in the format “Dropbox XX.XX.X.”
  2. Compare the version number you see to the numbers next to the most recent posts on the "Desktop client builds" Dropbox Community thread. The title of the post will tell you if you're running a stable or beta build.

Your version number matches an older stable build

If you're running an older stable build, updating to the latest stable build should fix the behavior you're seeing.

Follow these steps to install the latest stable build:

  1. Locate the latest "Stable Build" post on the Dropbox Community.
  2. Click Offline Installer next to your OS to download the latest stable build.
  3. Once downloaded, run the installer.

Note: Once installed, the desktop app may take some time to reindex your files and sync any changes.

If you’re still having trouble, contact Dropbox Support.

Your version number matches a beta build

If you're running a beta build, turning off auto-updates for beta builds and updating to the latest stable build should fix the behavior you're seeing.

Follow these steps to install the latest stable build:

  1. Sign in to dropbox.com.
  2. Click your avatar.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Choose Profile.
  5. Under Preferences, uncheck the box next to Include me in early releases.
  6. Locate the latest "Stable Build" post on the Dropbox Community.
  7. Click Offline Installer next to your OS to download the latest stable build.
  8. Once downloaded, run the installer.

Note: Once installed, the desktop app may take some time to reindex your files and sync any changes.

If the issue you’re experiencing was fixed by updating a beta build, you may want to continue to use the stable build.

If you’re still having trouble, contact Dropbox Support.

Your version number matches the current stable build

If you're running the current stable build, the behavior may come from an interaction with another app or with your OS.

Contact Dropbox Support with the details of the problem you're seeing.
