How to search the contents of your file

If you're a Dropbox Professional or Business user, you have access to a feature called full-text search, which can find files by file name, extension, or keyword within the file.

To search the content of your file:

  1. Sign in to dropbox.com.
  2. Type the keyword or file extension you’re looking for in the search bar.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. You can hover over a file to preview it and see if it's what you're looking for.

Note: This feature is only available in certain languages. If your search results don't include file content, then the feature isn't yet available in your language.

What file types are searchable?

Dropbox can search the contents of the following file types:

.doc

.docx

.docm

Paper docs

.pdf

.ppt

.pptx

.pptm

.rtf

.txt

.xls

.xlsx

.xlsm

Can I search text within images?

This feature (automatic image text recognition) is rolling out over the coming months to Dropbox Professional customers. Dropbox Business Advanced and Enterprise team admins can enroll in this feature via early access.

Users with automatic image text recognition can search English text within images including .gif, .jpg, .pdf, .png, and .tiff files.

This includes images that are pictures of a document (like a receipt) and .pdf documents created by scanners and fax machines.
