Changes to camera uploads

Camera uploads is a feature on the Dropbox mobile application that automatically backs up photos and videos from your phone or tablet.

On July 22, 2016, we're changing the way camera uploads works in Dropbox Basic accounts. As of this date, Dropbox Basic users will need to have the Dropbox desktop application installed to continue using camera uploads.

If you're a Basic user without a computer connected to your Dropbox account, you can enable camera uploads by doing one of two things:

  • Connect a computer: Download the Dropbox desktop app to better manage your camera uploads. Easily access, organize, or remove photos you don't want in your Dropbox Basic account.
  • Upgrade to Dropbox Plus: Keep all your photos in one place with 1 TB (1,000 GB) of space, along with more sharing controls and other great features.

If you prefer not to connect a computer or upgrade to Dropbox Plus, you can still back up specific photos and videos by manually uploading them to Dropbox.

Frequently asked questions about these changes to camera uploads

What happens if I don't connect a computer or upgrade to Plus before July 22, 2016?

You can enable camera uploads at any time via the settings menu on the Dropbox mobile app. Camera uploads will then back up any photos and videos currently on your mobile device.

What if I don't have a computer or don't want to upgrade to Plus?

If you can't connect a computer to your Dropbox Basic account, you can manually add photos to Dropbox with your phone or tablet. This lets you choose exactly which photos you want to save to Dropbox, and which folder they get saved to.

If I download the Dropbox desktop app will files on my computer automatically be added to Dropbox?

No. Files stored on your desktop computer won't automatically sync to Dropbox unless you add them to your Dropbox folder.
