Upload files from a phone or tablet

The Dropbox mobile app gives you different ways to upload files from your phone or tablet. Uploaded files sync with Dropbox on your computer and all your other connected devices.

This article outlines the different ways to upload from a mobile device.

Upload photos and videos automatically

Dropbox can automatically upload photos and videos taken from your mobile device using camera uploads.

To enable camera uploads on your mobile device, you must either:

  • Connect your computer to Dropbox, or
  • Upgrade to Dropbox Plus or Professional

Upload photos and videos manually

If you don't have camera uploads enabled, you can manually add photos to your Dropbox.

  1. Open the Dropbox app.
  2. Open the Dropbox folder where you'd like to store your photos.
  3. Tap the + (plus) icon at the bottom of your screen.
  4. Choose Upload photos or videos.
  5. Find the files you want to upload, and tap to select them for upload.
    • A check mark indicates the file has been selected
  6. Tap the folder icon, and select where you'd like the files to be added.
  7. Tap Set location.
  8. Tap Upload.

Upload other files from your device's storage

  1. Open the Dropbox app.
  2. Open the Dropbox folder where you'd like to store your photos.
  3. Tap the + (plus) icon at the bottom of your screen.
  4. Select Upload files.
    • You can select files from any location in your device's local memory
  5. Tap Upload (or Open on some devices).

Upload files from an external SD card

If your device has an SD card, you can upload files to Dropbox from there.

  1. Open the Dropbox app.
  2. Open the Dropbox folder where you'd like to store your photos.
  3. Tap the + (plus) icon at the bottom of your screen.
  4. Select Upload files.
  5. Navigate to your SD card, and tap the files you'd like to upload.
  6. Tap Upload (or Open on some devices).

If you can't view your SD card when browsing for files to upload:

  1. Tap the menu button at the top of the screen.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Verify that Show advanced devices is checked.

iPad

Upload photos and videos manually

  1. Open the Dropbox app.
  2. Tap the + (plus) icon.
  3. Tap Upload photos.
  4. Find the files you want to upload, and tap to select them for upload.
    • A check mark indicates the file has been selected
  5. Tap the folder icon, and select where you'd like the files to be added.
  6. Tap Set location.
  7. Tap Upload.

Upload or create files

To upload additional file types:

  1. Open the Dropbox app.
  2. Tap the + (plus) icon.
  3. Tap Create or upload file.
  4. Tap Upload File.

You can also choose to create content using Microsoft Office applications.

Upload other types of files

You can upload other types of files using either of the following:

  • The iOS Open In menu wherever it appears in other apps
  • Via App Extensions on iOS 8 and higher

For example, you can upload a file attached to an email:

  1. Open your email app.
  2. Open the email that has the attachment.
  3. Tap the attachment file name to open the file viewer.
  4. Tap the icon of an arrow coming out of a box.
  5. In the pop-up menu, you should see an Open in Dropbox option. Tap it to open the file in Dropbox.
  6. Tap Save.

Many other apps offer the Open in option as well.

iPhone

Upload photos and videos manually

  1. Open the Dropbox app.
  2. Tap the + (plus) icon.
  3. Tap Upload photos.
  4. Find the files you want to upload, and tap to select them for upload.
    • A check mark indicates the file has been selected
  5. Tap Next to enter the Save Settings screen. Choose which folder your photos will upload to, or rename all photos at once:
    • To rename all photos at once, tap Rename All and enter the new name for your photos. Photos are then automatically numbered in the order in which they were added. You can tap and hold the three horizontal lines to the right of an image to reorder it.
    • Tap Confirm to return to the Save Settings screen
  6. Tap Upload.

Upload or create files

To upload additional file types:

  1. Open the Dropbox app.
  2. Tap the + (plus) icon.
  3. Tap Create or upload file.
  4. Tap Upload File.

You can also choose to create content using Microsoft Office applications.

Photos will then instantly sync to all of your computers and mobile devices. Uploading to a shared folder allows other members of that folder to see your photo or video.

Windows Tablet
