How do I change the owner of a shared folder?

The creator of a shared folder is automatically the owner of the folder. The owner of a folder can:

  • Remove members from the folder
  • Choose who can invite people to the folder
  • Transfer ownership of the folder

How to change the owner of a shared folder

If you're the owner of a shared folder, you can transfer ownership to another member by changing the folder's options on dropbox.com. Once ownership is changed, the new owner will be the only person who can unshare the folder or remove members.

Note: You must be the current owner of a shared folder to transfer ownership.

Transfer ownership of a shared folder on dropbox.com

  1. Sign in to dropbox.com.
  2. Click Files.
  3. Navigate to or search for the shared folder you’re interested in.
  4. Click Share next to the shared folder.
  5. Click the dropdown arrow to the right of the name of the team member you'd like to transfer ownership to.
  6. Select Make owner and confirm your choice.

Transfer ownership of a shared folder on your computer

  1. Open your Dropbox folder.
  2. Right-click or command-click the shared folder.
  3. Select Share…
  4. Next to the name of a member, click the dropdown and select Make owner.
  5. Click Share.

I need to know who owns a shared folder

You can find out who the owner of a folder is in the folder's options:

  1.  Sign in to dropbox.com.
  2. Click Files.
  3. Navigate to or search for the shared folder you’re interested in.
  4. Click Share next to the folder you're interested in.

The pop-up window shows all members of the shared folder. The owner will have “Owner” next to their name.
