How to search your files on

Search on helps you find files and folders in your Dropbox account. All Dropbox users can search files in their Dropbox account by name and extension. If you’re a Professional or Business user, you can search the contents of files.

To search your files:

  1. Sign in to
  2. Type a term into the search bar.
  3. A list of relevant files appears. Press the enter key to see a comprehensive list of results.
  4. Click a file or folder to open it.

When you search for a file, you’ll see a thumbnail preview of the file when you hover over it. You can see previews for all file types you can preview in Dropbox, except for plain text and audio files.

Notes about thumbnail previews

  • Search thumbnail previews for Paper docs aren’t supported.
  • You can’t see search thumbnail previews when using a mobile browser. To see previews in search, go to on a desktop web browser.
  • Image files that are smaller than 64 x 64 pixels don’t preview.

How to search the contents of your files

With full-text search, you can search beyond the names of your files. It scans file names, extensions, and file contents, as well as Paper docs, to help you find what you’re looking for. Full-text search isn't case sensitive, and it includes personalized spell correction on your search queries.

Full text search is available to Dropbox Professional and Business customers. If you paired a Basic or Plus account with your Business account, you can also use full-text search on that account.

Note: Full-text search is only available in certain languages. If you use Dropbox in a language other than English, and you don't see full-text search, then the feature isn't yet available in your language.

To search the content of your files:

  1. Sign in to
  2. Enter the word or file extension you’re looking for in the search bar.

If any file or folder names match your search terms, they appear in the drop-down search results. If no file names match your search terms, click Search for '[search term]' in my Dropbox from the dropdown search bar. You'll be taken to the full-text search results.

Note: Since you're searching the actual file contents—not just the file name—the results shown may not look relevant at first glance. Click a file to preview it to see if it's what you were looking for.

If you're searching for a deleted file, scroll to the bottom of the results to view files that match your search criteria.
