How to search your files on dropbox.com

Search on dropbox.com helps you find files and folders in your Dropbox account. All Dropbox users can search files in their Dropbox account by name and file extension. If you’re a Professional or Business user, you can also search the contents of files.

To search your files:

  1. Sign in to dropbox.com.
  2. Type a term into the search bar.
  3. A list of relevant files appears. Press the enter key to see a comprehensive list of results.
  4. Click a file or folder to open it.

When you search for a file, you’ll see a thumbnail preview of the file when you hover over it. You can see previews for all file types you can preview in Dropbox, except for plain text and audio files.

Notes about thumbnail previews

  • Search thumbnail previews for Paper docs aren’t supported.
  • You can’t see search thumbnail previews when using a mobile browser. To see previews in search, go to dropbox.com on a desktop web browser.
  • Image files that are smaller than 64 x 64 pixels don’t preview.

How to search the contents of your files

With full-text search, you can search beyond the names of your files. It scans file names, extensions, and file contents, as well as Paper docs, to help you find what you’re looking for. Full-text search isn't case sensitive, and it includes personalized spell correction on your search queries.

Full text search is available to Dropbox Professional and Business customers. If you paired a Basic or Plus account with your Business account, you can also use full-text search on that account.

Note: Full-text search is only available in certain languages. If you use Dropbox in a language other than English, and you don't see full-text search, then the feature isn't yet available in your language.

To search the content of your files:

  1. Sign in to dropbox.com.
  2. Enter the word or file extension you’re looking for in the search bar.

If any file or folder names match your search terms, they appear in the drop-down search results. If no file names match your search terms, click Search for '[search term]' in my Dropbox from the dropdown search bar. You'll be taken to the full-text search results.

Note: Since you're searching the actual file contents—not just the file name—the results shown may not look relevant at first glance. Click a file to preview it to see if it's what you were looking for.

If you're searching for a deleted file, scroll to the bottom of the results to view files that match your search criteria.

What file types are searchable?

Dropbox can search the contents of the following file types:

Paper docs

Can I search text within images?

Note: This feature (automatic image text recognition) is rolling out over the coming months to Dropbox Professional customers. Dropbox Business Advanced and Enterprise team admins can enroll in this feature via early access.

Users with automatic image text recognition can search English text within images including .gif, .jpg, .pdf, .png, and .tiff files.

This includes images that that are determined to be a picture of a document (like a receipt) and .pdf documents that don’t have metadata (created by scanners and fax machines).
