How to reset a Dropbox password

If you remember your password, you can sign in to dropbox.com and change your password in your account settings.

If you can't sign in to your Dropbox account, your easiest option is to visit the Forgot password page to reset your password. You can also try one of the methods below.

How to reset your password on dropbox.com

  1. Open dropbox.com in your web browser.
  2. Click Sign in.
  3. Click Forgot your password?
  4. Enter the email address you used to create the account.
  5. Check your email inbox, and click the link in the email you received to reset your password.

Your new password will automatically apply to any computers or mobile devices linked to your account. Please review which devices are connected to your Dropbox account after resetting your password.

How to reset your password on the desktop app

  1. Click the Dropbox icon in your system tray or menu bar.
  2. Click the globe icon—you will be redirected to dropbox.com.
  3. Click your name at the top of the screen.
  4. Click Settings.
  5. Select the Security tab.
    • If you're signed in to both a personal and work account at once, you'll see a section in the Security tab for each account.
  6. Click Change password.
  7. Enter the email address you used to create the account.
  8. Check your email inbox, and click the link in the email you received to reset your password.

When using the Dropbox desktop app, you only need your password when you first install the app, or whenever you link or relink your computer to your Dropbox account. Please review which devices are connected to your Dropbox account after resetting your password.

How to reset your password using the Dropbox mobile app

If you’ve lost access to the email account associated with your Dropbox account, you can reset your password by sending a notification to your phone or tablet. You’ll need to be signed in to the Dropbox mobile app on an iOS or Android device for this method to work.

  1. Sign in to dropbox.com or the Dropbox mobile app with your expired password.
  2. Click I can’t recover my account using this page
  3. Click Yes.
  4. Click Send notifications. This will send notifications to all your linked devices.
  5. When you see the notification on your linked device, click Details.
  6. If you’re resetting on a web browser, click Continue. If you’re resetting in the Dropbox app, tap Yes.
  7. Enter your new email address.
  8. Click Submit
  9. Locate a password reset link in your new email’s inbox. 
  10. Click Reset password
  11. Enter your new password.
  12. Click Submit.

After you reset your password, your Dropbox account email will be switched to your new email. Please review which devices are connected to your Dropbox account after resetting your password.

How to change your password (if you still remember the old one)

If you’re already signed in to dropbox.com, you can update your password in your account settings.

  1. Open dropbox.com in your web browser.
  2. Click the avatar at the top of any page.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Select the Security tab.
    • If you're signed in to both a personal and work account, you'll see a section in the Security tab for each account.
  5. In the Password section, click Change password.
  6. Enter the email address you used to create the account.
  7. Check your email inbox, and click the link in the email you received to reset your password.
    • If you don't receive the reset email, check the spam folder of your inbox. If the reset email isn't there, try adding no-reply@dropbox.com to your address book and then resending the password reset email.

Once you've changed your password, please review which devices are connected to your Dropbox account.

How to reset your password if you’re a Dropbox Business team member

You may not be able to reset the password for your work Dropbox account if your admin has turned on the single sign-on (SSO) feature. Please contact your admin for help resetting your Dropbox Business password.
