Dropbox Backup now available in all global regions

With Dropbox Backup, our simple and secure cloud backup and recovery solution, you can easily back up content like videos and personal documents – and quickly recover if your device crashes or gets lost or stolen.

New users and Dropbox Basic account holders can purchase the Dropbox Backup plan with as much space as needed for one computer. All existing Dropbox users can try Dropbox Backup today within their existing plans.

Streamline your eSignature requests with Templates without ever leaving Dropbox

Our intuitive eSignature solution lets you send, sign and store important documents in one seamless workflow, but now you can streamline every eSignature request by turning your most frequently used documents, like NDAs, offer letters, SOWs, contracts and more, into templates directly from your Dropbox account

Make simple edits to PDFs directly from Dropbox

Users can now save time by making lightweight updates to PDFs without leaving Dropbox. This feature, rolling out to beta for select users, eliminates the need to download a PDF, open it in another application, make edits then save the new version to Dropbox. With Dropbox, users can:

  • Rearrange PDF pages
  • Insert, rotate and delete PDF pages
  • Manage multiple versions: save PDFs as a copy or replace the original
  • Fill PDF forms

The ability to edit PDFs is coming soon to beta for selected users, followed by a rollout to all Dropbox users over the coming weeks.

Convert audio file formats without leaving Dropbox

Users can now convert audio files to another format, including .wav to .mp3, in just a few clicks. File conversion helps users save time by converting file formats directly from Dropbox. It eliminates the need to open a file in another application, change the format then save the new version to Dropbox. Users can manually convert individual files or use automated folders to automatically convert multiple files. Audio file conversion is available to all Dropbox users.

Updates to multi-file organise now available

Multi-file organise helps categorise and sort multiple files at the same time based on dates, keywords or level of file activity. We’ve made improvements so users can find their content faster by choosing from a selection of format options to name their folders when choosing the Sort by month rule.

The multi-file organise feature is available on all Dropbox plans.

Native Apple silicon support

Dropbox now provides native support for Mac computers with Apple silicon (M1). With full support, Dropbox is able to leverage Apple silicon’s improved performance and efficiency to run seamlessly on your Mac devices.

Automated folders

Users can now create folders that automatically perform specific tasks like converting, categorising, sorting or tagging. Every time a file is added to an automated folder, the designated action occurs. All automated folders can be created and viewed in a centralised dashboard.

Automated folders are available on all Dropbox plans.

Multi-file organise

Users can now categorise and sort multiple files at the same time based on dates, keywords or level of file activity. All sorting can be previewed and verified before files are moved.

The multi-file organise feature is available on all Dropbox plans.

Naming conventions

Redesigned details pane on the web

View important content highlights in new, detailed panes on the web. Users can now:

  • Pin important folders for easy access
  • View file activity, including file history
  • Add, edit, delete and resolve comments

New sharing option

Teams on Dropbox Business Standard and Dropbox Business Advanced can now share and manage access to files and folders in the team space directly from their desktops. Using the Finder (Mac) or Explorer (Windows), team members can manage content without having to go to the web.

Folder suggestions

Users on Dropbox Basic, Plus and Professional plans will now receive recommendations for folders with different permissions based on the user’s role and how their team collaborates – whether that’s internally, externally or both. Team members will see these suggested folders during onboarding.

Password breach notifications

Dropbox Passwords users will now get alerts when their account details are at risk. These notifications include instructions and will allow users to respond quickly to fraud, theft and security breaches.

Password breach notifications are available to all Dropbox Basic, Plus, Family and Professional users.

Streamlining the desktop experience

We are no longer supporting the desktop window (shown here) beginning on 17th Jan. 2022. Users will still be able to save, view, share and access all of their files with the Dropbox folder on Finder (Mac), Explorer (Windows), the taskbar or menu bar, dropbox.com and the latest iOS and Android apps.

Add searchable tags to files and folders

Users can now add hashtags to files and folders to better organise their content. These user-generated tags are searchable, so users can find what they need fast. Users will be able to add and remove tags in bulk.

Tagging is now available on all plans.

Photos on web

This new feature lets users view all their photos and videos in one centralised place on the web. Users can now quickly find and access their photos and videos on any device by clicking on Photos in the left sidebar on dropbox.com.

Photos on web is available on Dropbox Basic, Plus, Family and Professional plans.

File preview enhancements

An updated, web-based details pane gives users more information about their files, including size, dimensions, resolution, all associated comments and when it was last modified. They can also convert file types without leaving Dropbox.

Dropbox July 2021 Product Updates

Backup for external drives

External drive backup lets users automatically back up content stored on external drives to Dropbox. Following the release of computer backup, this new feature lets users recover and restore files from external devices and access them on the go. External drive backup is available on Dropbox Basic, Plus, Family and Professional.

Camera uploads enhancements

We’ve enhanced camera uploads functionality and availability to help more users keep their photos safe and organised. All users, including those on the Basic plan, can now back up photos and videos automatically with camera uploads. We’ve also significantly improved background functionality for faster, more reliable uploads and now support uploads from specific albums and additional file types, including live photos, bursts and edits (iOS only).

Passwords enhancements

Since it launched in August 2020, we’ve made a few updates to Dropbox Passwords to increase usability. Updates include:

  • Passwords browser extension: Users can now capture and populate email addresses, usernames and passwords through their browsers.
  • Passwords sharing: Always know who has access to which accounts by securely sharing passwords and payment information.
  • Support for credit and debit cards: Now users can store and access credit and debit card information in the same place as their passwords.

Dropbox Passwords is available to all Basic, Plus, Professional and Family users and Business teams that are part of our early access programme.

Simplified surfaces

We’ve launched new features to help users stay organised at work and at home, including:

  • Simplified tray: Quickly access content and confirm that files are safely synced in the taskbar (Windows) or menu bar (Mac).
  • New navigation: Find content faster with an updated side navigation experience on the web.
  • Redesigned details pane: See important content highlights in an updated intuitive web details pane.

These new features are available on Dropbox Basic, Dropbox Plus, Dropbox Professional and all Dropbox Business plans.

External sharing page

A new external sharing page in the admin console lets admins see how data is shared outside the company. Admins on Dropbox Business Advanced, Dropbox Business Enterprise and Dropbox Education plans can view and filter (by file type, who shared and link settings, among others) all files and folders shared externally.

Sharing controls

With enhanced sharing controls, admins can now set default expiration time and password restrictions for shared links to control access to company data. Sharing settings are available on Dropbox Business Standard, Dropbox Business Advanced and Dropbox Business Enterprise.

Enhanced data classification

Dropbox Business Enterprise admins now have the ability to identify and classify sensitive data stored in shared folders and personal team member folders. Admins will receive alerts if sensitive data stored in a team member folder has potentially been compromised. Once the setting is turned on, admins can configure the scope of the scan for PII.
